Connecting with the Indirect Supply Chain Ecosystem

The world is becoming flatter, and the manufacturing and supply chain industries are no exception. Globalization, disruptive technology, and managing logistics beyond the last mile all pose distinct challenges for procurement professionals navigating the indirect supply chain. One of the best ways to stay up-to-date with the latest technology and trends is to through continuous education and networking within the Indirect Supply Chain Ecosystem.

SDI’s VP of Facilities Management Solutions, Bob Steinhagen, had the honor of speaking at ProcureCon Facilities in Fort Lauderdale this past January. He talked about how the RFP process, that this mostly procurement audience goes through on a regular basis for their organizational stakeholders, is inherently flawed. RFPs are prescriptive, telling the would-be subject matter experts What they should bid on, rather than asking How they would propose to arrive at a solution to their particular problem. An RFS, or Request for Solution, provides a more collaborative approach and leverages the supplier’s expertise. What he had to say was not new for SDI, but it opened up ideas for others and generated some key best practice sharing.

In addition to the keynote, SDI exhibited at this event as well, fielding questions about how MRO and Facilities are connected and how solutions that consider both can open up expansive opportunities for business improvements. ProcureCon Facilities, the newest addition to WBR’s event schedule, is a senior-level event dedicated to the unique challenges involved with sourcing real estate, construction, utilities and facilities management services.

SDI also exhibited at ProcureCon Indirect East in February. ProcureCon Indirect is an interactive, peer-led event for senior procurement practitioners, focusing on the indirect supply chain in particular. For over 10 years, ProcureCon has helped companies transform their programs through innovative workshops and intimate networking sessions – designed to elevate the conversation beyond cost savings.

Data standardization is part of Google’s new initiative to help people find relevant datasets.  With a recent study from Data Science Central, it’s estimated that data scientists spend 60% of their time preparing data for analysis, rather than performing the analysis itself.  Therefore, the goal of this schema is to drive standardization so that more time can be spent analyzing it.
